Bomb disposal team called in and 80 evacuated after 'hazardous materials' found in Glasgow flat

Around 80 people were evacuated and a bomb disposal team called in after "hazardous material" was found in a flat in east Glasgow, Police Scotland said.

Police arrived at the flat in Shettleston shortly after 5pm on Monday and remained onsite well into Tuesday morning.

The Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene while officers tried to determine the nature of the materials.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes on Tuesday morning.

Chief Superintendent Alan Waddell said: "Our enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and there will be a continued police presence in the area. We are working closely with our partners.

"I would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience whilst we dealt with this incident.

"There was no danger to the wider public."

Alytre Street, Dalness Street, Ard Street and Trainard Avenue were closed overnight but reopened on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 5.39pm on Monday, 7 August to reports of an incident involving suspected hazardous materials at a property on Altyre Street, Glasgow.

"Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to the scene, including specialist HAZMAT units."
