High street staple Boots and delivery company Deliveroo (ROO.L) announced on Tuesday that they are teaming up to provide an on-demand delivery service for selected health and beauty products.

The trial will take place in 14 locations across the UK, with delivery of 400 products including food and drink, medicines for minor ailments and bestselling No7 beauty products.

Boots own brand ranges such as Soltan and Staydry will also be available, alongside bathroom cabinet essentials like plasters, vitamins and hand sanitiser.

"It will be super handy for times when you need something urgently but can’t leave the house, like if you’re feeling unwell or are looking after your kids," said Paula Bobbett, director of boots.com at Boots UK.

The partnership could expand to more Boots stores in the future if the pilot scheme is successful.

Online delivery companies have seen business surge since the beginning of coronavirus lockdowns, as people opted to stay in rather than go to the shops.

Boots saw a continued rise in online sales during this period. The company said that orders on boots.com were up 85% between 1 March 2020 and 1 March 2021 compared to the same period the previous year and "continue on a strong trajectory."

Alongside this, Deliveroo has been expanding its offering from takeaway meals in recent months, as the UK emerges from lockdowns. In the company's latest financial results, the company said it had seen order growth slow in the second quarter.

Its gross transaction value (GTV) — the total value of orders made on its platform — grew by 131% in the first quarter of 2021. But growth slowed to 81% in the second quarter, as restrictions on day-to-day life began to ease.

The delivery company has also moved into grocery delivery.
