Yahoo Finance Brexit news - live: Lorry drivers fined £32,000 in a week in Kent as UK retailers stop shipping to EU
Lorry drivers in Kent have been handed more than £32,000 in fines in the first week after the Brexit transition period ended, after some hauliers were caught entering the UK without the necessary new documentation and others tried to skip the queue.
It comes as UK retailers such as John Lewis and Fortnum & Mason have been forced to suspend shipping their products to the EU, with the British Retail Consortium warning at least 50 of its members, all large brands, may face new tariffs on items re-exported to the bloc. Meanwhile, continental customers of other brands have reported being hit with additional post-Brexit charges.
Meanwhile senior politicians in the UK are calling for a peaceful transition of power in the United States, after Donald Trump “incited” his supporters to storm the Capitol building with fatal results. While Boris Johnson and foreign secretary Dominic Raab have so far failed to condemn Mr Trump outright, home secretary Priti Patel eventually blamed the outgoing president’s incendiary rhetoric as having “directly led” to the violence in Washington.
