Past rivals Theresa May and Boris Johnson pictured celebrating Tory win

Boris Johnson has been photographed celebrating the Tory election success with former leadership rival and boss Theresa May - despite their past differences.

The pair gave no indication of the difficulties they had after Mrs May became Tory leader and Prime Minister in 2016.

Mrs May appointed Boris Johnson as her Foreign Secretary after he decided to drop out of the Tory leadership race that year, triggered by David Cameron’s post-referendum resignation.

Mr Johnson withdrew after he lost the support of Michael Gove - now a member of the Boris Johnson cabinet.

But after an often-criticised tenure as Foreign Secretary, he left Mrs May’s government following a falling-out over her Brexit plan, and then went on to vote against her initial attempts to get her withdrawal agreement through Parliament.

Mrs May failed to mention Mr Johnson in her post-election speech last Thursday in her Maidenhead constituency.

Nonetheless, Mrs May, now a backbencher, voted for Mr Johnson’s Brexit deal before the election was called.

And both looked jovial at a reception yesterday evening in Westminster in a photo taken by Walsall North MP Eddie Hughes.

He said on his Instagram account: “What a Party. Toasting #GE2019 success with fine English sparkling wine… Here’s to a great 2020.”
