Boy, 14, appears in court charged with murder of five-year-old Logan Mwangi found in Bridgend river

A 14-year-old boy charged with the murder of five-year-old Logan Mwangi has appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court.

The teenager, who has not been named by police because of his age, appeared in person in front of District Judge Stephen Harmes.

It comes after Logan - also known as Logan Williamson - was found dead in Ogmore River near Pandy Park in Bridgend on 31 July.

He was taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital in the town, where it was confirmed that he had died.

Appearing in court, the 14-year-old boy spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

He had previously appeared at Newport Crown Court on 14 August charged with perverting the course of justice.

The teenager, who was 13 at the time of the last hearing, was remanded into care of the local authority.

A man, 39-year-old John Cole, of Sarn, Bridgend, has previously appeared in court charged with Logan's murder and perverting the course of justice.

Angharad Williamson, 30, of Sarn, has also been charged with perverting the course of justice.

Judge Michael Fitton QC set a provisional trial date of 31 January next year.

Logan is said to have suffered a torn liver, an internal injury to the back of his head, and a broken collarbone.

At the inquest opening in Pontypridd, coroner's officer Lauren Howitt said Logan had been formally identified by his grandmother Claire Williamson.

She told the hearing that a post-mortem had been carried out but further investigation was needed before a cause of death was announced.

South Wales Police major crime investigation team is carrying out the ongoing inquiries into the death.

Friends of the family paid tribute to Logan as a "kind, funny, polite, handsome and clever" boy following his death.

People - many of whom did not know Logan - left flowers, tributes, toys and teddies in front of the police cordon by the river.
