Boy, 4, Dies In House Fire In South Wales

A four-year-old boy has died in a house fire near Pontardawe in South Wales.

The boy was in an upstairs bedroom at the property on Lon Tanyrallt, Alltwen, along with a three-year-old boy when the fire broke out.

Four firefighters went into the burning building and managed to get the boys out, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said.

The four-year-old boy died at the scene.

His mother raised the alarm at 1.40am and was outside with her six-year-old daughter as neighbours tried to get in to the building to get to the stranded children.

The woman, thought to be in her 20s, and the two surviving children were taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea suffering from suspected smoke inhalation.

Chris Margetts, senior operations manager for the fire service, said the blaze was "very severe".

He added that smoke detectors were thought to have raised the alarm in the house, and urged homeowners to check them regularly.

The fire service and South Wales Police are investigating the cause of the fire. An appeal for witnesses has also been launched.
