This couple’s “non-traditional” way of deciding their last name is going viral on TikTok.

In the U.S., it’s a tradition that the wife takes the husband’s last name, and he keeps his. While some embrace the practice for their own reasons, others may feel it’s a bit sexist to default to ensuring the husband’s legacy lives on while the wife’s is erased. Moreover, the tradition isn’t exactly useful when the couple is same-sex or a party is nonbinary.

Travel blogger @diaryofasolotraveler, aka Alyssa Danielle, shared how her friends who recently got married ditched the old school way and let fate decide.
“POV: Your friends decide whose last name they are taking by a flip of a coin at the altar,” Danielle wrote.
The bride and groom stood at the floral-themed altar of their outdoor wedding, holding hands. A member of the wedding party flipped a coin on their behalf. The result was “heads,” and the couple was dubbed “Mr. and Mrs. Hanson.” The bride didn’t look nearly as stoked as her husband.
The video received over 1.7 million views on TikTok. People loved the idea.
“I know a couple whose families had a paintball match to decide! Winning side determined the last name,” someone wrote.
“My wife and I chose our own last name! So cool to see so many people open to this now,” a person said.
“My maiden name is Back, and my husband is Stolhand. I wanted us to be the Backhands. He said no,” another added.
Danielle explained in a later video that she didn’t expect her video to go viral.
“I thought it was a really cool moment at my friend’s wedding,” she said. “It was a fun, equal, non-traditional idea that they had. Many of you guessed it right based on the facial expressions, but he did win the coin flip.”
