Yahoo Finance Bride says groom’s family wants her to wear his ‘grandmother’s old garter’: ‘Creepy and gross’
A bride doesn’t agree with the garter tradition of the groom’s family.
She asked Reddit’s “Wedding” forum to weigh in. Her fiancé’s family wants her to wear his “grandmother’s old garter.” Several members of the family have worn it to their own weddings.
But the bride finds it “weird,” and the groom’s family was “shocked” by her reaction. She wants confirmation from the forum that the request is indeed “odd.”
Garters are bridal lingerie worn under the wedding dress. Traditionally, after the ceremony, the groom removes the garter with his teeth or hands. Then similar to a bouquet toss, he throws it into the crowd.
Brides.com reports that this tradition dates back to the Dark Ages. It was considered good luck for a guest to have a piece of the bride’s outfit. For a time, people would chase the bride to her marital bed and rip at her clothes. This practice eventually evolved into the bouquet and garter toss.
Redditors did agree with the poster and found the request bizarre.
“Creepy and gross and weird and I hate it,” a user wrote.
“It’s a gross and stupid tradition,” a person added.
“That is a tradition I am glad seems to be going away period. None of the weddings I have been at lately have slung the garter,” someone said.
“Yes, this is so weird and so awkward,” another commented.
“This is a great opportunity to create boundaries with your new family,” a Redditor replied.
