Britney Spears's conservatorship battle explored in new BBC documentary

Britney Spears’s conservatorship is getting the BBC documentary treatment.

Fans were recently gripped by the Framing Britney Spears documentary, which told how the singer’s dad Jamie has been in control of her assets since 2008 and boosted the #FreeBritney movement, which is supported by many celebrities.

Now a brand-new documentary for BBC Two will see Bafta-winning journalist Mobeen Azhar exploring the conservatorship.

The programme will follow Azhar as he journeys from Spears’ hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana, to Los Angeles and talks to those fighting to "free" the Toxic singer from the conservatorship.

He said in a press release: “I went to LA in search of the truth of how Britney Spears, one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, ended up in a conservatorship.

"I found myself in a world of lawyers, superfans and paparazzi and spent time with many of the people who’ve had a front-row seat in Britney’s life.”

Azhar said the film “taps into the energy of the #FreeBritney movement and questions the industry, fandom and the laws that facilitate conservatorships”.

Mum-of-two Spears, 39, saw control of her assets from her successful pop career pass to her father in 2008 as she was placed on involuntary psychiatric hold.

The hashtag #FreeBritney went viral on social media after the Framing Britney Spears documentary aired earlier this year, with Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler and Khloe Kardashian amongst those getting behind the singer.

The BBC Two documentary – which has the working title Britney – is set to air later in the spring.
