Dow Jones industrial average e-mini futures were up 0.14 percent at 17,696, S&P 500 futures were up 0.14 percent at 2,074 and Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.17 percent at 4,429.5.

U.S. health insurer Centene said it would buy Health Net for $6.3 billion in cash and stock to bolster its position as a manager of government health insurance programs.

PayPal Inc said it would buy digital money transfer provider Xoom for $890 million as it muscles into a growing international remittance market and expand in countries like Mexico, India and China ahead of a spinoff from eBay Inc.

Shares (Berlin: DI6.BE - news) of Western Union fell after Evercore ISI cut its rating on the stock to "hold" from "buy" and its price target to $20 from $23, citing the deal.

General Electric met EU antitrust regulators on Thursday, hoping they will take a softer line on its 12.4-billion-euro ($13.7 billion) bid for Alstom (Paris: FR0010220475 - news) 's energy unit.

The electric car maker said Model S deliveries rose 52 percent to 11,507 in the second quarter, "a new company record for the most cars delivered in a quarter."

Brazil's state-run oil company Petrobras moved quickly on Wednesday to deliver on promises to shed assets and raise cash by announcing the sale of stakes in two offshore oilfields and a study of ways to sell part of its fuel-distribution unit.

** ARCELORMITTAL SA, Wednesday close $9.64, -0.10 pct premarket

ArcelorMittal (Other OTC: AMSYF - news) , the world's largest producer of steel, will cut 2,800 jobs at its Mexico unit as global prices slump, it said in a joint statement with local competitors on Wednesday, while accusing Russia, China and Turkey of dumping steel on markets at levels below production costs.

British electrical goods and mobile phone retailer Dixons Carphone said its Connected World Services (CWS) division has signed a deal with Sprint, the U.S. mobile network operator, to open and manage Sprint-branded stores in the U.S.

The head of global mining firm Rio Tinto urged governments not to be tempted by protectionism as they try to preserve revenues at a time of weakening commodity prices.
