The Dow Jones industrial average was up 1.58 percent at 17,635.83, the S&P 500 was up 1.18 percent at 2,044.75 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.18 percent at 4,685.38.

** TWITTER INC (Xetra: A1W6XZ - news) , $40.02, +6.83 pct

The microblogging site said promoted tweets, or tweets by brands, to appear on third-party mobile apps, websites under new advertising distribution program. Its first partners are newsreader app Flipboard and Yahoo Japan.

The electronics manufacturer reported fourth-quarter revenue below average analysts estimate as demand in its computing and telecom business fell. The company also forecast profit and revenue for the first quarter below estimate.

** SALIX PHARMACEUTICALS LTD (NasdaqGS: SLXP - news) , $140.85, +5.39 pct

Canadian drugmaker Valeant Pharmaceuticals is in talks to buy Salix, Bloomberg reported, quoting people with knowledge of the matter. British drugmaker Shire Plc (Xetra: S7E.DE - news) was also interested, Bloomberg said. (http://bloom.bg/1Da0N5B)

** M/A-COM TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS HOLDINGS INC, $30.08, -6.87 pct

The chipmaker announced an offering of 6.5 mln shares on Monday. It will offer 4.5 million shares, with remaining being offered by majority shareholder and board Chairman John Ocampo and his affiliates, and funds affiliated with Summit Partners LP. The company had about 47.8 million shares outstanding as of Jan. 29, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Navigation software maker posts rise in quarterly revenue for the first time in five quarters and the biggest increase in ten quarters. Second-quarter revenue rose 7 percent, helped by strong software demand and higher income from mobile advertising.
