Unique features of Canada's passport

The regular Canadian passport boasts a navy blue cover with a gold embossed seal. It contains 36 pages, 29 of which can hold visa stickers and stamps. Canadian passports feature the following general and internal features.

General features of Canadian passports

Canadian passports can be issued in a variety of ways. Some of these variations include the type of passport, e-passports, longer-validity passports, and children's passports.

Passport type

There are five types of passports issued by Canada today. Each type has a different purpose and is characterized by a different jacket cover.

  • Canada's regular passport boasts a navy blue cover. Every day Canadian citizens use this passport, and you can somewhat personalize it with different lengths of validity.

  • Canada distributes a green passport to those who represent its government on official business, like Members of Parliament, public servants, and Canadian Forces posted abroad.

  • The diplomatic passport has a maroon cover. These passports are issued to Canadian diplomats and other high-ranking government officials.

  • Canada's temporary passport has a white cover. This passport is issued temporarily while a permanent passport is being processed. The temporary passport only has eight pages and a validity of up to one year.

  • The emergency travel document is a single-use document without a cover. Canadians can return to their home country if their existing passport is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Electronic passports with five- or ten-year validity

Any Canadian passport issued after July 1, 2013, is issued as an ePassport. Adults with these passports can choose a five-year or ten-year validity. This feature is available for first-time applicants and those renewing their passports.

Adult and children's passports

The regular passport comes in adult and child versions. Children's passports are issued for a maximum of five years before they must renew.

Internal features of Canada's passports

Inside the Canadian passport, there are several other features. You can find these features on pages two and three or on the personal information pages.

Digital photo

The citizen's picture is digitally printed and embedded into the passport page. The digital photo is also accessible on the electronic passport's electronic chip.

Digitally-printed personal information

The citizen's personal information is printed and embedded into the passport page on page two. Like the digital photo, this information is also on the ePassport's electronic chip, except for the holder's birthplace.

TORONTO, ON - DECEMBER 4: Travellers take a moment to figure out the new machines. With holiday travel set to increase, Pearson Airport and U.S. Border and Customs officials invite media to see 40 automated processing kiosks -- that should speed up wait times. The kiosks that are in use at seven other airports have reduced wait times by more than 35 per cent. December 4, 2013. (Richard Lautens/Toronto Star via Getty Images)
