Team Canada defenceman Braden Schneider has been suspended for one game, after delivering an illegal check to the head on Germany’s Jan-Luca Schumacher, during Saturday’s 16-2 opening win.

Schneider delivered the hit midway through the first period, and Schumacher was slow to get up. Canada was already leading 2-0 against an undermanned Germany squad, reduced to 14 players due to COVID-19 cases. He is eligible to return against Switzerland on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old was selected 19th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft, and is expected to feature heavily for Canada during this year’s tournament.

Schneider recorded seven goals and 42 points for the WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors in 60 games during the 2019-20 season.
