British business lender Tide said it would not provide payment deferrals for small firms that took out state-supported loans during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first lender to break ranks and withhold such support. The government announced new "Pay As You Grow" (PAYG) measures in February, offering struggling companies the chance to push back repayment on state-backed loans to 10 years from six, among other options. Tide's decision not to offer PAYG is an early indication of how lenders are making difficult choices between their own commercial interests and those of small businesses, as unprecedented levels of support for such firms are withdrawn.

EasyJet and tour group TUI said they had joined the action led by Manchester Airports Group (MAG) aimed at challenging the government for an alleged lack of transparency over travel rules. The two airlines join the country's other biggest travel firms Ryanair, British Airways-owner IAG and Virgin Atlantic as interested parties in the case.
