Cara Delevingne has said she experienced suicidal thoughts while struggling with her sexuality.

The 28-year-old model and actor, who has previously dated actor Ashley Benson and musician St Vincent, said she was "probably quite homophobic" growing up.

She told Gwyneth Paltrow on The Goop Podcast that she grew up in an “old-fashioned household”, adding: “I didn’t know anyone who was gay.

“I didn’t know that was a thing and actually I think growing up I wasn’t knowledgeable of the fact that I was probably quite homophobic.”

On the idea of a same-sex relationship, she said: “I was like, ‘Oh my god, I would never, that’s disgusting, ugh.'”

Delevingne went on: “I do correlate the massive depression and the suicidal moments of my life because I was so ashamed of ever being that. But, actually, that was the part of me that I love so much and accept.”

The Carnival Row star said she was still coming to terms with her sexuality as she shared: “There is still a part of me where I’m like, ‘Oh, I wish I could just be straight.’ There is still that side to it. It is really complicated.”

Delevingne and Benson split last year after almost two years together. Shortly after they were said to have parted ways, Delevingne stepped in to defend her Pretty Little Liars star ex after she was reportedly spotted kissing rapper G-Eazy.

“It’s more important now than ever to spread love, not hate,” she wrote on Instagram.

“To everyone hating on @ashleybenson please stop. You don’t know the truth, only her and I do and that’s exactly how it should be.”

It was reported earlier this year that Benson and G-Eazy, real name Gerald Gillum, had called time on their relationship.
