Is CBIZ, Inc.'s (NYSE:CBZ) Stock's Recent Performance A Reflection Of Its Financial Health?

CBIZ's (NYSE:CBZ) stock up by 6.1% over the past three months. Given that the market rewards strong financials in the long-term, we wonder if that is the case in this instance. In this article, we decided to focus on CBIZ's ROE.

Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. Put another way, it reveals the company's success at turning shareholder investments into profits.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for CBIZ is:

14% = US$107m ÷ US$774m (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).

The 'return' is the yearly profit. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated $0.14 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

CBIZ's Earnings Growth And 14% ROE

At first glance, CBIZ seems to have a decent ROE. Further, the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 16%. This certainly adds some context to CBIZ's moderate 11% net income growth seen over the past five years.

As a next step, we compared CBIZ's net income growth with the industry and found that the company has a similar growth figure when compared with the industry average growth rate of 13% in the same period.

Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. What investors need to determine next is if the expected earnings growth, or the lack of it, is already built into the share price. By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. What is CBZ worth today? Is CBIZ Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?

Given that CBIZ doesn't pay any dividend to its shareholders, we infer that the company has been reinvesting all of its profits to grow its business.

Summary

On the whole, we feel that CBIZ's performance has been quite good. Specifically, we like that the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits at a high rate of return.
