A celebration of Captain Sir Tom Moore’s life is to take place on April 30, on what would have been his 101st birthday.

Capt Sir Tom, who raised more than £32 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden, died aged 100 in February after testing positive for Covid-19.

Last week his family held a “small family funeral” in light of coronavirus restrictions.

His family have now revealed the war veteran’s foundation will be holding a special celebratory event that people in the UK and around the world can get involved with.

Capt Sir Tom’s daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore said the event will “celebrate his generosity of spirit, the hope and joy he brought to millions and his sense of fun”.

In a statement posted on her father’s official Twitter account, she said: “I would like to say an enormous thank you for the continuing support and compassion we’ve been shown over the last few weeks. It is helping us through a very difficult period.

“On Saturday we were able to give my father a fitting send-off adhering to his wishes in every way. We played music he loved, spoke words that filled us with joy and the addition of full military honours would have had him bursting with pride.”

She added: “So many of you have asked what will be done to commemorate the life and spirit of my father Captain Tom and we’ve had some amazing suggestions. The Captain Tom Foundation will be celebrating his life on what would have been his 101st birthday.”

Thousands of people have signed an online book of condolence to pay tribute to the national hero.

Many shared their condolences to the Moore family, including a statement from Buckingham Palace who said the Queen “very much enjoyed meeting Capt Sir Tom and his family at Windsor last year” and “her thoughts, and those of the Royal Family, are with them”.

In acknowledgement of his fundraising, Sir Tom was knighted by the Queen during a unique open-air ceremony at Windsor Castle in summer 2020.

His 100th birthday celebrations last year included a Spitfire flypast and he was photographed punching the air as it went past.

There are plans to plant trees around the world in his honour, with his daughter Lucy Teixeira, hoping the Trees for Tom initiative will result in a wood in his home county of Yorkshire and the reforestation of part of India, where he served during the Second World War.
