Champions of Europe! Chelsea FC show off Champions League trophy to fans at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge were in for a real treat on Wednesday night as they got a glimpse of the Champions League trophy Thomas Tuchel’s players won last season.

The Blues beat Manchester City in an all-English final at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, with Kai Havertz scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win in Porto.

Havertz’s goal ensured Chelsea lifted the European Cup for the second time in their history, though the result will have been bittersweet for the thousands of fans who would otherwise have been in the stadium on the night.

Both Chelsea and City fans were allowed to travel to the rearranged final - originally due to be played in Turkey - though Covid-19 restrictions limited the attendance to around 16,500 supporters.

That meant many Chelsea fans who would normally have qualified to buy final tickets were unable to watch their team win the trophy - but they got their chance as Tuchel’s players unveiled the silverware ahead of the Blues’ pre-season friendly against Spurs at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.

The chance to lift the trophy in front of London rivals who have never got their hands on it was not lost on the Chelsea fans, singing: “Champions of Europe!”
