Can ChannelAdvisor (NYSE:ECOM) Continue To Grow Its Returns On Capital?

What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at ChannelAdvisor (NYSE:ECOM) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for ChannelAdvisor:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.14 = US$19m ÷ (US$181m - US$43m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).

Therefore, ChannelAdvisor has an ROCE of 14%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 11% generated by the Software industry.
