Check out our men’s beach and swimwear summer style guide

With the heat of summer comes the need for easy breezy summer style. Whether you’re at a pool party or the beach, it’s important to stay cool and fresh in warmer temperatures, but it’s just as important to stay cool and fresh with your outfits.

In this episode of In The Know’s The Guide, host Jovel Roystan dives into summer swimwear style and summer fashion faux pas with Billy Porter’s stylist, Sam Ratelle (@sammyratelle).

Roystan believes that a good fashion entrance is a must, even if your plan is to get in the water.

“I always start with a nice button down,” says Roystan holding a colorful Zara flower print shirt. “And underneath I like to layer things up with a mesh tank,” he continues as he shows off a mesh tank top by INC. “It’s breathable, it’s comfortable,” says Roystan. “But I know every guy isn’t trying to wear mesh so just use a classic or ribbed option and you’re good to go.”

For bottoms, you can’t go wrong with a good pair of statement swim trunks. Roystan claims to love a good print, and grabs a pair of Orlebar Brown X Stuart Cantor Bulldog swim shorts with an eye-catching wraparound print.

If an all-over-print isn’t your thing, Roystan offers a pair of Heron Preston swim shorts for a more subtle design that’s not too minimal either.

No look is complete without footwear, so Roystan slips into some Off-White espadrilles to complete his summer look.

Of course, sunglasses are a must for any summer ‘fit. Not only do they protect your eyes, they can also make a statement.

“The first thing you wanna do is find a style that fits the shape of your face,” Roystan says about the right pair of shades. “Once you’ve got that figured out, play around with different design elements,” he continues as he grabs a pair of square frame sunglasses from Off-White with tinted lenses.

But what about summer fashion don’ts?

Roystan chatted with celebrity stylist, Sam Ratelle, about fashion faux pas to avoid at your next summer pool party.

“I think one of the big no-nos that we have—and I think everyone is re-adapting to this—is these long board shorts,” Ratelle says as Roystan nods in agreement. “If you’re getting to the knee, you’re in a little bit in danger. Whether you’re gay or straight or whatever, we’ve gotta show off our bodies and I think that’s the memo now,” Ratelle continues.

However, there are style solutions for the more body conscious beach-goer. For the Style Challenge, Roystan put together an outfit that utilizes a Zara fruit print shirt for a more covered up look.

Regardless of your style preference, when it comes to summer fashion the name of the game is being comfortable in your own skin! Don’t forget the sunscreen!
