Chelsea FC 1-1 Aston Villa LIVE! Blues win penalty shootout - Carabao Cup result, match stream and latest updates today

Chelsea vs Aston Villa LIVE!

Chelsea needed penalties to see off stubborn Aston Villa in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Kepa Arrizabalaga saved Marvelous Nakamba’s spot-kick, with Reece James booking a last-16 clash with Southampton after Ben Chilwell had struck the crossbar in an entertaining shootout.

Earlier, Timo Werner’s first goal of the season looked to have reigning European champions Chelsea on course for progress, only for Villa teenager Cameron Archer to hit back with a header.

Ashley Young also hit the woodwork after the tie went to penalties, with Thomas Tuchel’s side adding to their European Super Cup shootout win against Villarreal in Belfast last month.

Chelsea made 10 changes from the side that beat Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek making his first start of the season, though Atletico Madrid loanee Saul Niguez flattered to deceive once more in midfield.

Chelsea roll on

22:01 , James Robson

Well that was a thrilling end to a game that took time to catch fire.

An end-to-end second made up for a rather dour opening 45 minutes. And a penalty shoot-out that looked destined to be a stroll for Chelsea ended up going down to the final kick, with James planting the winner.

It was fitting that he had the decisive moment. He had been impressive all game - clearing one effort off his own goal-line and setting up Werner’s opener.

No doubt this competition is low down on Tuchel’s list of priorities - but his animated gestures on the touchline made it clear he really wanted to win this match.

Kepa to the rescue?

21:43 , James Robson

He was the hero in the Super Cup. Can Kepa do it again tonight?

FULL TIME Chelsea 1-1 Villa

21:41 , James Robson

The game will go to penalties.

21:39 , James Robson

90+3 mins: Loftus-Cheek was so close to a winner with his head, but is denied by a goal-line clearance.

21:37 , James Robson

90+1 mins: Tuchel is livid after referee Graham Scott awards a free kick to Villa following James’ flailing hand to the face of Buendia. He took his cap off and slammed it to the ground.

Who says he is not taking this cup seriously?

21:30 , James Robson

84 mins: We are entering the final stages here and it is Chelsea on the fron foot. Hause just stopped Lukaku from running through on goal.

The home crowd call for a penalty, but it looked like a good challenge.

21:24 , James Robson

79 mins: Mount forces a save with a powerful drive that goes out for a corner.

SUBSTITUTION | Lukaku and Barkley for Saul and Ziyech, Konsa for Cash 76’

21:21 , James Robson

21:16 , James Robson

72 mins: Now this really is end-to-end. Buendia fires over from eight yards out after good work again from Cash.

21:14 , James Robson

69 mins: Well this game has come to life. Mount should have put Chelsea back in front after some lovely footwork in the box, but pokes his shot wide.

21:13 , James Robson

67 mins: And another chance. Archer turns Chalobah and squares to Philogene-Bidace who fires low, but is denied by Kepa.

21:11 , James Robson

66 mins: A big chance for Villa after they work El Ghazi into space on the left. But his powerful is straight at Kepa.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Villa | Cameron Archer 64'

21:10 , James Robson

Terrific header from Archer after Cash’s arching cross to the far post. Kepa had no chance.

SUBSTITUTION | Philogene-Bidace for Traore 64'

21:08 , James Robson

21:06 , James Robson

61 mins: Traore tries his luck from distance, but his low effort goes straight at Kepa.

21:02 , James Robson

56 mins: Werner should have made it two, but drags his shot wide from the angle. He should have done better.

And Chelsea are in full flow now, with Ziyech forcing a save from Steer.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Villa| Timo Werner 54'

21:00 , James Robson

Chelsea take the lead moments after a big shout for a penalty for the home side.

James’ cross hung invitingly for Werner, who headed past Steer.

Moments earlier Werner’s shot had struck the hand of a Villa player, but no penalty was awarded.

20:55 , James Robson

50 mins: Better from Chelsea and another chance for Hudson-Odoi - forcing a save with is cross shot.

Tuchel has made the change and it is already having an impact.

20:53 , James Robson

48 mins: Hudson-Odoi cannot get his foot around the ball after Ziyech’s teasing ball across the box.

He connects on the corner of the six-yard box, but his effort slices wide.

20:51 , James Robson

46 mins: So that’s another half time substitution from Tuchel with Mount coming on. It has to be said, it was a strange decision to start Kante in this game. It will be interesting to see if the formation changes or if Mount is asked to play more of an orthodox midfield role.

SUBSTITUTION | Mount for Kante 46'

20:50 , James Robson

SECOND HALF

20:49 , James Robson

HALF TIME

20:35 , James Robson

Not too impressive from Chelsea and they are fortunate not to be behind. Will we see another half time intervention from Tuchel? Something certainly needs to change.

No fluidity and but for Kepa and James, Villa would be ahead at the break.

20:31 , James Robson

45 mins: Villa should be ahead. Kepa pulls off a brilliant save when one-on-one with Archer - and from the rebound El Ghazi sees his goalbound effort cleared off the line by James.

SUBSTITUTION | Chukwuemeka for Sanso 42'

20:28 , James Robson

20:26 , James Robson

41 mins: Another bright opening for Chelsea with Hudson-Odoi playing the ball in to Werner in the box, but the German can only hit his shot into legs.

20:23 , James Robson

37 mins: Ziyech is the first Chelsea player to force a serious save from Steer with a snap shot from distance that is well held.

20:22 , James Robson

36 mins: That was a promising move from Chelsea, with Loftus-Cheek particularly impressive when driving forward and spreading the ball out wide for Hudson-Odoi. But the winger wastes the chance to get the ball in early and loses it.

YELLOW | Malang Sarr | 31'

20:20 , James Robson

The Chelsea defender is penalised for lunging in on Traore.

20:14 , James Robson

27 mins: Tuchel is getting frustrated. He was convinced Chelsea should have had a corner then, only for a goal kick to be awarded. But he may also be frustrated with his side’s lack of fluidity so far. Perhaps it is understandable with so many changes, but they are yet to find their rhythm.

20:08 , James Robson

23 mins: That was a big chance for Saul. He rose, unchallenged to meet Kante’s cross from the right, but headed wide.

20:01 , James Robson

14 mins: Kante - of all people - is guilty of over-hitting his pass to Werner when the German was racing into space. That was a promising opening for Chelsea. It’ s been a pretty open game so far, with both sides looking dangerous when venturing forward.

19:55 , James Robson

9 mins: Chance for Villa. Archer should have done better running through on goal. He had only Kepa to beat, but lifted his shot too high and it flies over the bar.

19:53 , James Robson

6 mins: Werner looked set to race away, but the ball runs just too far for him to reach.

Werner’s chance to shine

19:18 , James Robson

Timo Werner starts for the first time since the opening game of the season as Thomas Tuchal rings the changes for Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Aston Villa.

The German has not been in the starting XI since victory against Crystal Palace last month.

But Tuchel believes he is close to returning to form after such a difficult start to his Chelsea career.

Ahead of Wednesday’s game Tuchel said: “We know that he can be much more dangerous and much more of an attacking threat than he was. In the last training sessions he’s been more relaxed, more fluid in his movements, and showing more confidence.

“And that’s why we put him on early against Tottenham, because we saw this development and there are clear signs that he is on a good way. And I hope he can show and prove it.

“Sometimes it needs a bit of time. Sometimes you don’t have this one particular reason why things look a bit more easy, but Timo is in this moment. Also he can push himself and keep this momentum going.

“Everybody is happy if he can show his skills in front of goal. This is why he is here to be dangerous, to score goals and also to assist. And to create and open spaces with aggressive runs. This was a big step forward in the last game against Tottenham.”

Chelsea team (3-4-2-1): Kepa; James, Chalobah, Sarr; Hudson-Odoi, Kante (c), Saul, Chilwell; Ziyech, Werner, Loftus-Cheek

Tuchel makes 10 Chelsea changes

19:10 , George Flood

Ruben Loftus-Cheek will make his first start of the season as Chelsea make 10 changes.

Kepa Arrizabalaga is the only man to keep his place from Sunday's 3-0 Premier League win at Tottenham, with boss Thomas Tuchel rotating his resources almost to full extent.

Former Barcelona prospect Xavier Mbuyamba takes a seat on the bench, with the 19-year-old defender eyeing his senior Chelsea debut.

Cameron Archer starts up front for Villa, with Dean Smith making nine changes.

Chelsea to unleash £300m worth of reserves on Aston Villa

18:15 , George Flood

Chelsea’s ‘fringe’ team tonight is expected to be worth some £300million.

But Tuchel isn’t paying much attention to those figures, saying yesterday about the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga: “Who cares about the money? The money was paid and so what now?

“The question is now can we afford to have him as a goalkeeper? We have two super strong goalkeepers and we need both of them.”

On Timo Werner, who should lead the line for Chelsea tonight in search of his first goal of the season, he added: “We know that he can be much more dangerous and much more of an attacking threat than he was.

“In the last training sessions he’s been more relaxed, more fluid in his movements, and showing more confidence.

Standard Sport prediction

Tuchel could well make 11 changes to his side and still boast a frighteningly good XI, meaning Villa face a daunting task regardless of how highly the German values this competition.

Chelsea to win 2-0.

Chelsea team news

17:48 , George Flood

Edouard Mendy is facing a fight to be back in time for Chelsea’s crunch clash with Manchester City.

The goalkeeper has been ruled out of tonight’s Carabao Cup tie with Aston Villa after missing the 3-0 win against Tottenham over the weekend.

He is still to recover from a knock suffered against Zenit last week, with Chelsea’s medical staff monitoring him ahead of Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel confirmed: “We’ll try to do everything for Saturday, and to reintegrate him tomorrow to individual training and then hopefully Thursday into team training. But not yet.

“I think it is possible (for him to be back for City) but it is a bit of a race against pain and time. I hope he will be back in team training on Thursday.

“If it goes well, I hope he can be ready for Saturday, but I don’t know right now.”

Tuchel plans to make a number of changes against Villa with Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell expected to start, while Saul Niguez and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are both in contention.

The Chelsea manager added: “It’s a matter of the amount of games, the load that we’ve had for the players.

“Yes we will have some changes, because we take the opportunity to give important minutes in important competitions to guys who are missing minutes at the moment.

“Of course, we want to give Saul some minutes. First of all, the guys want to show and impress and keep on pushing.

“We need some players to have more competitive minutes and be a competitive team. We need them to have the opportunity to push some guys and to trust them also in a competitive cup match like tomorrow. Saul is one of them.”

Chelsea predicted team (3-4-2-1): Kepa; James, Christensen, Chalobah; Hudson-Odoi, Loftus-Cheek, Saul, Chilwell; Ziyech, Werner; Lukaku
