Winners of the BBC / RHS People's Choice Award at the Chelsea Flower Show 2019 has been announced – with the Welcome to Yorkshire Garden by Mark Gregory winning Best Show Garden, The Donkey Sanctuary: Donkeys Matter designed by Christina Williams and Annie Prebensen winning Best Artisan Garden, and the CAMFED Garden: Giving Girls in Africa a Space to Grow by Jilayne Rickards winning Best Space to Grow Garden.

People's Choice Award: Best Show Garden

The Welcome to Yorkshire Garden, designed by Mark and built by his company Landform Consultants, claimed a Gold medal earlier in the week for this year’s design.

The garden is inspired by Yorkshire’s rich industrial heritage and celebrates the country’s canals and waterways, natural environment, green spaces and gardens. Not only did it wow the crowds this week in SW3 but a couple even got engaged on the Show Garden.

‘Wow, I’m blown away, it’s such an honour to have received this award again, and for my 99th Chelsea garden too,’ said Mark, who won the same award in 2018. ‘It’s a privilege to have been able to share the place I call home with the world and it seems that people love Yorkshire as much as I do, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who voted.’

Mark was presented with the award by hosts, journalist Sophie Raworth and garden designer and star of Garderners’ World, Joe Swift.

The Welcome to Yorkshire Garden is to showcase the county to the world and encourage people to visit Yorkshire and explore it for themselves.

Marking The Donkey Sanctuary’s 50th anniversary, the garden (pictured above) is designed to showcase the charity’s international work and demonstrates how owning a donkey means access to clean, fresh water for some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the world.

The garden was clearly a favourite among visitors at the show. While a shelter provides a shady spot near a well, above which hangs a bucket, on higher ground, a bank of lavender is reached by a path that leads to a rocky area.

Donkeys are the ultimate in sustainable transport – they provide access to clean, fresh water, transport food and medicine and enable children to receive an education. The path in the garden represents the vital journeys that donkeys carry out on behalf of some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities where no ‘white van’ or family car can travel.

Announced earlier today, the first award for Space to Grow went to the CAMFED Garden: Giving Girls in Africa a Space to Grow.

The garden, designed by Jilayne Rickards, brings the surroundings of rural Zimbabwe to SW3.

Capturing the spirit of Africa with its vibrant colours and exotic flavours, the garden is a representation of female-led, climate-smart agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. It draws attention to the urgent need to empower and educate young women in some of the world’s poorest communities most affected by climate change.

CAMFED, the Campaign for Female Education – a charity backed by Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – has for the past 25 years worked to educate girls and empower young women in sub-Saharan Africa.

'This innovative garden design illustrates how we support girls in the classroom and beyond, to reach their full potential,' CAMFED CEO, Lucy Lake previously said. 'We are working to equip more CAMFED alumnae to become sustainable agriculture experts, using their horticultural and entrepreneurial skills to provide nutrient-rich food, education and employment for people in their communities, and to build resilience to climate change.'

The People's Choice Award in 2018 was won by Mark Gregory in the Show Garden category for his breathtaking Welcome to Yorkshire Garden. Will he win again for his second Yorkshire Garden? Or will the 10 other Show Gardens claim the coveted title?
