The inaugural Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase will take place today as this year’s Cheltenham Festival wraps up and, unsurprisingly, Willie Mullins has a strong hand.

The Irish trainer has been the dominant force in both the Mares’ Hurdle and Mares Novices’ Hurdle since those races were introduced at the Festival and his charge Elimay is favourite to become the first winner of the new contest.

The JP McManus-owned mare is unbeaten in chases against her own sex, with her only defeat over fences coming against stablemate Allaho - a leading contender in the Ryanair - in a Grade 2 at Thurles in January.

Another Mullins contender is Colreevy who is three out of three in her novice chase career - including a Grade 1 win against the geldings at Limerick on Boxing Day - and she will take on her stablemate, having at one stage looked set to skip the Festival.

Shattered Love is a former Festival winner, having landed what was the JLT back in 2018, but she suffered her first defeat in mares-only company when finishing second to Elimay last time out, albeit over a short than ideal trip.

One usually served best by an even more extreme test of stamina is Magic Of Light, runner-up in the Grand National two years ago, but the Jonjo O’Neil-trained Annie Mc was ruled out by a setback on the eve of the Festival.

The Mares’ Chase will be run at 4:15pm on Friday, March 19, 2021, the final day of this year’s Festival.

TV channel: The Mares Chase will be shown live on ITV1 and Racing TV.
