TikTok is known for starting lots of beauty and wellness trends.

These days influencers are touting the benefits of an unexpected supplement: chlorophyll. Fortunately, this trend isn’t hazardous to your health. Here’s why people are chugging the stuff that turns plants green.

A viral video showed @snaillyyyyy transform her skin by drinking chlorophyll for five days. The user claimed it evened out her skin tone by healing hyperpigmentation.

“My skin is so clear it’s been 3 days,” one commenter said.

The hashtag #chlorophyllwater has over 25.2 million views.

What is chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is the green pigment in plants and algae. It plays an essential role in photosynthesis, the process plants use to convert sunlight into energy. It’s actually responsible for absorbing energy from light which is later converted to carbon dioxide and carbohydrates.

What are chlorophyll’s benefits?

Chlorophyll supplements are known to have many health benefits including stimulating the immune system, detoxifying the blood, cleaning your intestines and reducing body odor. It also has anti-fungal properties and can contribute to cancer prevention.

Most TikTokers are taking liquid chlorophyll and suspending it in water. As explained by Dr. Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist, this water soluble form is known as chlorophyllin. The supplement received Bowe’s approval as a potent antioxidant.

“Chlorophyllin can protect free radical damage from occurring in your mitochondria. And actually, our skin needs healthy mitochondria,” Dr. Bowe said. “So if you’re not going to sit down with a bowl of spinach, you might benefit from drinking some chlorophyll water.”

Not everyone is seeing quick results, however.

The user @kaylajean.h shared her recipe to make the supplement taste better, she suggested adding a squeeze of orange and lemon to mask the taste. After three days, though, she didn’t really see any results.

“I haven’t really noticed any difference except my pee is green,” she said
