Ciara Miller says she's 'not sure' about future with 'Winter House' co-star Austen Kroll: 'It's a little bit rocky'

When season five of Summer House was airing at the start of 2021, Ciara Miller — then experiencing her first bouts of reality TV fame — decided to jump headfirst into the experience by opting to film the show’s first spinoff, Winter House.

Taking place over the course of a 17-day trip to a shared house in Vermont, the Bravo series is a snowy, party-filled answer to the sunny, Hamptons-set Summer House that mixes cast members from multiple different shows, including Southern Charm. As part of one of the six-episode season’s central romances, Miller finds herself taking center stage.

For the latest episode of In The Know’s pop culture interview series, We Should Talk, Ciara Miller opened up about her relationship with Austen Kroll and where they stand now, the show’s other hookups, Summer House season six and more.

“I had no predictions,” Miller told In The Know about whether or not she had an idea of who she might cozy up to on Winter House. “I think people had predictions for me. But I honestly was very open. I didn’t come in thinking that I was going to necessarily be with Austen or that that would be the thing, but I was kind of just like, ‘I just want to have a good time. I’m open to do whatever.’ And then, obviously, you vibe with whoever you end up vibing with. Austen and I ended up really hitting it off, and it just kind of worked from the beginning.”

On where she stands with Austen Kroll now: “The future? Not sure, but right now, it’s a little bit rocky. It’s really the nitty-gritty of filming a TV show. When you film with someone that you’re intimate with, I feel like there’s a certain level of trust that I need to have. And I’m very much [like], ‘loyalty and trust is at the foundation of my relationships.’ So, when I feel like that is shaken or wavers, it’s kind of hard for me to brush it under the rug. We had to take a little bit of time, but I don’t think we’ll ever not be friends, truthfully. It’s just a matter of that I think he needs to be more set in his opinion of things and not be influenced by other people’s opinions.

On what she knew about Austen Kroll and Lindsay Hubbard’s relationship: “I’m still learning about it. There’s a lot of stuff that I wasn’t privy to, and I’m just now watching. I’m like, ‘OK.’ Things would’ve been a lot different had I known some of the information, in terms of Austen kind of looking like he’s playing both fields and then Lindsay being truly hurt by me and him having a thing. Had I known that emotions were that deep, I would not have entered into a relationship or a situation-ship or whatever in Vermont. I think it would’ve been definitely different. I truly didn’t know! … We were there for 17 days, so we definitely had an opportunity to chat about it. If something needed to be said, there was time, and there wasn’t [anything said]. But my problem wasn’t ever with Lindsay. It was definitely with Austen. Like, ‘You need to clear this up, whatever it is. If you guys do feel like you want to figure things out, and you have unfinished business, then you need to go and do that, and I’ll take a step back.’ But Austen did a really great job about communicating, like, ‘No, that’s not what I want.’ He set his own boundaries, and I was like, ‘OK, this is what you’re telling me. These are the boundaries that you’re setting. Your actions and your words are kind of aligning.’ So it was like, ‘I believe you.'”

On what she knew about Austen Kroll and Madison LeCroy’s relationship going into Winter House: “I don’t watch Southern Charm. I didn’t watch it beforehand, and I made it a point not to watch it prior to coming to the house because I wanted to fully get to know Craig and Austen without having my bias already in my head of what it could be or what they are. So I wanted to give them a fair chance. I had seen things, but I wasn’t up to date on all the information, and quite frankly, I didn’t want to be. I just felt like, ‘OK, he’s not in that relationship anymore. I don’t need to know the details of it, and that’s his past relationship. OK.’ But I could definitely tell that there were moments in the house where he was definitely struggling with it. He expressed some things towards me — or he expressed it with me — but not the nitty-gritty of it. I don’t think he wanted to have the ex talk, which I totally agree with and understand. I could see that it was an internal struggle for him of liking someone and having this be on the back-burner, and then Lindsay… it was a lot. I don’t think he expected the whole ‘I love you’ thing from Lindsay.”

On Paige DeSorbo and Craig Conover’s relationship: “People are doing a lot, and I’m like, ‘You need to just relax because it was not like that. It was not dirty.’ Paige is not the type to be another chick on the side, and Craig damn sure does not believe in cheating or even coming close to an element of that. The timelines are fine, and they play out just fine.”

On filming Summer House without Hannah Berner: “It’s definitely weird. When we went back this summer to film, it was very strange. I always tell her, ‘I miss you! I wish you were filming with us.’ She was definitely my rock last season and quickly became one of my good friends, but there was just a lot of drama that went down. Her taking a step back and being able to pursue comedy on a full-time level is also something that was so good for her. She’s been killing it. We’ve remained friends, and we still see each other.”
