FAA says Boeing can't boost 737 MAX production yet
STORY: Boeing has failed to get the immediate go-ahead from the Federal Aviation Administration to increase 737 MAX production.The FAA said on Thursday (May 30), after a three-hour meeting with the planemaker's top executives, that it would work with Boeing over the coming months to understand its quality and safety improvement.Boeing was barred in February from boosting 737 MAX production after a door panel blew out during a January flight on a newly made plane.Boeing late on Thursday released an 11-page summary of its improvement plan, outlining six critical, safety-focused production areas it will address. They include data on employee proficiency, the number of hours needed to address issues, and supplier shortages, which Boeing said will enable them to identify and prevent safety hazards. The FAA said earlier that Boeing had committed to release more plan details "in the interest of transparency and public confidence."Production of the 737 MAX, Boeing's top selling plane, is vital to the company's finances. Last week its top finance executive said it will burn, rather than generate, cash in 2024 due in part to delayed deliveries.

Billons of dollars in gold is smuggled out of Africa each year and most of it ends up in the United Arab Emirates, where it is refined and sold to customers around the world, according to a report published Thursday. Over $30 billion worth of gold, or more than 435 metric tons, was smuggled out of the continent in 2022, according to the report published by Swissaid, an aid and development group based in Switzerland. The main destinations for African gold were the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Switzerland.

Global airline bosses to address geopolitical, climate challenges
(Reuters) -Geopolitical tensions, aircraft shortages and ambitious environmental targets will deliver a host of challenges to global airline bosses at an annual summit next week, with softening fares completing a delicate outlook for carriers. The influential International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents more than 300 airlines and over 80% of global air traffic, holds its annual meeting on June 2-4 in Dubai, the world's busiest international hub. The industry returned to profit in 2023 and air passenger traffic touched 2019's record numbers early this year, IATA says.

Mercedes eyes reduced trade barriers from new India government
German carmaker Mercedes-Benz wants India's next government to forge more free trade agreements (FTAs) and reduce trade barriers to help boost luxury car sales in one of the world's biggest auto markets, its country head said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has built a business friendly image over the last decade, is eyeing a rare third straight term in office in India's national election that ends on Saturday. Asked about issues Mercedes-Benz would like to see resolved when the new government takes charge next month, its India managing director and CEO, Santosh Iyer, said increased FTAs and reduced trade barriers "remain highly desirable from economic growth perspective".

In China, sales fell 27% and Japan saw a 14% decline.The results in both regions offset double-digit growth in the United States and Europe. The sales dip in China’s auto market, the largest in the world, comes as Toyota - and other automakers - remain locked in a fierce price war. They’re facing huge pressure to shift to electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids which are being sold by Chinese brands and are becoming increasingly dominant.Toyota's Japan sales were hit by a temporary halt to production of the Prius model for quality checks - and a partial halt to production of the plant that makes Noah and Voxy minivans. Toyota faced fallout from the scandal at small car maker Daihatsu.The world's top automaker by volume reported a 4.0% drop in global production.Markets with weaker output included China, Japan, Thailand and Mexico. Nearly 40% of the vehicles sold by Toyota in April were gasoline-electric hybrids - and only 2% were electric vehicles.Separate figures for Daihatsu showed its worldwide sales plunged 54% in April.The automaker’s shares were down in after hours trading.
