The City Pub Group to unveil vegan pub and go more green

The City Pub Group on Wednesday pleased the Square Mile and environmentalists by revealing sales growth alongside plans to open a vegan boozer and scrap plastic drinking straws across its estate.

Executive chairman Clive Watson said the firm has secured a new site in Parson’s Green which will re-open in March serving only vegan drinks and food.

More meat-free and dairy-free meals will also be introduced to the chain’s existing 33 watering holes. Plastic straws will be axed within three to four months.

The move follows rivals such as JD Wetherspoon, which is introducing biodegradable paper straws instead.

Watson, who has appeared on reality TV show Made in Chelsea with daughters Lucy and Tiffany, told the Standard: “I think our industry has got a big part to play in [helping] the environment.”

The City Pub Group saw comparable sales increase by 3.8% in 2017. Total turnover jumped 34% to £37.4 million.

The firm also said co-founder David Bruce has resigned from the board to focus on his other interests in the pub and brewing industry.

Punch Taverns’ former chief operating officer Neil Griffiths has been appointed as a non-executive director.
