Clarence Chew is first Singapore-born paddler to qualify for Olympic men’s singles event

SINGAPORE — Clarence Chew has become the first Singapore-born paddler to qualify for the Olympic men’s singles event.

In the all-Singapore finals, Clarence Chew beat his team mate Koen Pang 4-0 (11-7, 11-7, 15-13, 11-4) at the Asian Qualification event which ended on Saturday (20 March), the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) said in a media release.

Chew said, “This is my lifelong dream to qualify for the Olympics as a representative of Singapore...I am so looking forward to the Tokyo Olympics and I promise I will make Singapore proud!”

STTA President Ellen Lee said the association is very proud of Chew's achievement.

“This is indeed an extraordinary feat. Clarence’s achievement is an inspiration to us all. I hope this will spur many of the younger generation of players to dream big and achieve their dreams,’’ Lee said.

Head coach of STTA Gao Ning said the accomplishment by Chew is a dream come true for him and the Singapore table tennis team will now focus and continue the success in the Tokyo Olympics.
