Claudio Ranieri: I had to stop watching rerun of Watford’s thrashing by Liverpool after just 10 minutes

Claudio Ranieri: I had to stop watching rerun of Watford’s thrashing by Liverpool after just 10 minutes

Claudio Ranieri has revealed he had to stop watching a rerun of Watford’s heavy defeat by Liverpool after just 10 minutes as it was too painful.

Watford were thrashed 5-0 by the rampant Reds last weekend in what was Ranieri’s first game in charge since being appointed as Xisco Munoz’s successor at Vicarage Road.

Ranieri is now onto his 22nd managerial job in football but he cannot remember ever losing his first match by such an emphatic scoreline.

“I said I put everything on my shoulders because when you lose 5-0…I tried to watch the match but after 10 minutes I said: ‘No, I don’t want to see’ because there were so many mistakes, and it wasn’t possible to repeat all these mistakes,” Ranieri said.

“Of course I told the players and I showed to them: ‘Look, we made these mistakes’. And then we go on the pitch and we try to improve and do what I want to do.”

Asked if he has ever lost his first game at any club 5-0, Ranieri replied: “I think no, never. I lost one match if I remember 6-2 when I was in Fiorentina against Lazio.

“We lost every counter-attack, we lost a penalty, we hit the post. But the other team scored everything.

“And the other one if I remember was 6-0 against Real Madrid when I was in Valencia. But 5-0, no, never. And never again do I want to see this.”

Ranieri celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday and revealed he deals with defeats differently now he is more experienced.

“The difference [when I was younger] was maybe I didn’t sleep for maybe two or three days,” he said. “Now I try to sleep, and sometimes I sleep earlier.”
