In most companies, annual compensation cycles are focused heavily on performance measures of employees and measures of market reference for salaries

What is an employee's true worth to a company where she works? How can we put a number and a quantitative value to such an intangible thing? Sounds impossible? Yet, isn't this what we are doing every time we are deciding on salary raises for employees? Every single employee brings a unique combination of skills, experience, eminence and engagement to work every day. These values combine to produce the tangible (or sometimes not so tangible) business results that often directly or indirectly determine the salary raises the employee gets. But how do you value potential? What about the criticality of unique skills towards a future strategy for a company's direction? Too often, salary programs may miss all these 'intangibles' and focus instead on stacked performance measures and market salary averages for broad categories.
