Cold shoulder tops are back for one hilarious (and timely) reason

A few years ago, cold shoulder tops were the hot new style. You know the ones — the shirt that had cutouts over one or both shoulders? At the time, they were fun and flirty. But thankfully, after one season, the fashion world moved on without them. [Editor’s note: I distinctly remember wearing a coral-colored one to dinner during my freshman year of college and feeling fabulous.]

While the style was short-lived at the time, they occasionally come back into fashion like a lot of trends. However, cold shoulder tops are back this spring due to one very of-the-moment reason: vaccines.

Now, as Covid-19 vaccines become more readily available, people are heading to their appointments in shoulder-baring shirts so that when the time comes for the jab, they’re ready.

The trend got some viral attention on Twitter during early March, thanks to Dolly Parton receiving her first dose on camera in a cold shoulder top of her own. Twitter user @rachelnpr replied to the video of Dolly with the message: “And finally, the rhyme and reason of the cold shoulder shirt has been made plain.”

And truth be told, a cold shoulder top is probably the most practical thing that you could wear to receive a vaccine. After all, your shoulder is exposed while you remain comfortable. Plus, you get to avoid any awkwardness of rolling up a shirt sleeve or pulling your neckline to the side. It’s a win-win.

Below, shop six shoulder-baring tops that are cute enough to wear — vaccine appointment or not.
