We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Trevena, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRVN).

What Is Insider Selling?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Trevena

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Chairman Leon Moulder for US$102k worth of shares, at about US$1.02 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of US$1.02 per share to be enticing. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. Happily, the Trevena insiders decided to buy shares at close to current prices.

In the last twelve months insiders paid US$162k for 158k shares purchased. Trevena may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any.
