A Competitive Eater Shared How He Lost 45kg in 15 Weeks

Competitive eater Randy Santel has lost more than 45kg in the last four months, a process he describes as "Sexification 2021". In a new video on his YouTube channel, Santel speaks about how he sustained "consistency and momentum" in his lifestyle and diet in order to achieve the results he wanted.

"Fitness is recommended, nutrition is required," he says, explaining that he set himself the goal of eating at a caloric deficit each day, while still consuming enough fuel to power all of the physical activity he would be undertaking as a part of the challenge.

This included hitting a minimum of 10,000 steps every day, and clocking a minimum of 10 hours per week on his stationary bike. He upped this activity as time went on, culminating in 20 hours of cycling in the final week, which Santel completed while watching all of the Harry Potter movies at the same time as riding the exercise bike.

Santel goes on to describe the bowling-inspired system he used to help keep his nutrition on track, saying that he and his wife Katina only kept "strikes and spares," i.e. the healthier food options, in their kitchen, and only ordered "gutter ball" foods on rare occasions when they were out.

"I try to think of my body as a high-performance machine," he says. "I focus on fuelling it with strikes and spares, and not so many open frames and gutter balls. I also do that with my mind: I try to focus on all the positive things, the strikes and spares, that will help me succeed."

Santel started the challenge on August 9, at which point he weighed 393.6 pounds. On November 22, he completed his 15-week journey, having surpassed his goal of losing 100 pounds, currently weighing in at 285.2 pounds (a total loss of 108.4 pounds).
