Consensus Cloud Solutions' (NASDAQ:CCSI) investors will be pleased with their notable 35% return over the last year

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But you can significantly boost your returns by picking above-average stocks. To wit, the Consensus Cloud Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:CCSI) share price is 35% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market decline of around 22% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! Consensus Cloud Solutions hasn't been listed for long, so it's still not clear if it is a long term winner.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the last twelve months, Consensus Cloud Solutions actually shrank its EPS by 34%.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Therefore, it seems likely that investors are putting more weight on metrics other than EPS, at the moment.

However the year on year revenue growth of 115% would help. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

A Different Perspective

Consensus Cloud Solutions shareholders should be happy with the total gain of 35% over the last twelve months. The more recent returns haven't been as impressive as the longer term returns, coming in at just 6.5%. Having said that, we doubt shareholders would be concerned. It seems the market is simply waiting on more information, because if the business delivers so will the share price (eventually). While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Consensus Cloud Solutions (1 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
