Why you should consider building your own prefab home

Most people dream about building their own home but are put off by a number of things; the potential cost, the inevitable building delays, the stress of finding somewhere else to live in the meantime.

But all those fears can be eased to a large extent by advances in construction technology and the advent of the modern prefabricated, or prefab, home.

The word “prefab” conjures images of the post-war building boom and sturdy-but-ugly housing only ever intended by planners to be temporary.

Today, the construction industry tends to use the language of “modular housing” instead, which is prefab by another name. And prefab homes are better than ever.

Modular homes are built in factories, transported in pieces to the building site, and quickly assembled like Lego by builders. This process is significantly more efficient with time, materials, and labour, meaning it is often cheaper and faster than a traditional build.

What would normally take months or years can be done in weeks or even days. The risk of construction delays due to the weather, for example, is dramatically reduced.

Modern prefab homes are also stylish and even beautiful in their design, with many architects boasting sought-after awards for their plans.

They are also easily customised to your tastes and tend to be highly energy efficient, saving you money on bills as well as saving the planet.

Just take a look at the homes on offer from modular housing specialist companies such as Phoenix Homes, Huf Haus, BAUHU, nHouse and others—you might be surprised.

Prefab homes also come in all shapes and sizes, from studio flats to multi-bedroom family houses, so are a potential option for pretty much anyone’s housing needs.

And many of the companies will guide you through the entire process, from planning through connecting things like drains and electricity, right up to completion, to make the journey as smooth as it is short.

So if you want to build your own home, it’s worth thinking about going prefab to save yourself time, money, and a whole lot of stress.
