Coronado Global Resources' (ASX:CRN) growing losses don't faze investors as the stock increases 4.1% this past week

Passive investing in index funds can generate returns that roughly match the overall market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). For example, the Coronado Global Resources Inc. (ASX:CRN) share price is up 51% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 24% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Coronado Global Resources hasn't been listed for long, so it's still not clear if it is a long term winner.

On the back of a solid 7-day performance, let's check what role the company's fundamentals have played in driving long term shareholder returns.

View our latest analysis for Coronado Global Resources

Coronado Global Resources wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Coronado Global Resources actually shrunk its revenue over the last year, with a reduction of 8.6%. Despite the lack of revenue growth, the stock has returned a solid 51% the last twelve months. We can correlate the share price rise with revenue or profit growth, but it seems the market had previously expected weaker results, and sentiment around the stock is improving.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Coronado Global Resources' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Coronado Global Resources' TSR of 58% for the 1 year exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.

A Different Perspective

Coronado Global Resources shareholders should be happy with the total gain of 58% over the last twelve months. And the share price momentum remains respectable, with a gain of 67% in the last three months. This suggests the company is continuing to win over new investors. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Coronado Global Resources (including 1 which is a bit unpleasant) .
