No place for complacency in fight against COVID, PM Modi tells new ministers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday cautioned against any complacency in the fight against COVID-19, saying that over the past few days there have been pictures and videos of crowded places and people roaming about without masks or social distancing and "it should instil a sense of fear in us," sources quoted PM Modi as saying.

They said the Prime Minister noted that people not following COVID-19 protocols was not a "pleasant sight".

The Prime Minister chaired the first meeting of his expanded council of ministers on Thursday.

India recorded a single-day rise of 45,892 new COVID-19 cases, taking its infection tally to 3,07,09,557, while the count of active cases increased slightly to 4,60,704 after being on a consistent downward trend for nearly 55 days, according to the Union Health Ministry on Thursday. The death toll has climbed to 4,05,028 with 817 new fatalities being reported.

The 817 new fatalities include 326 from Maharashtra, 148 from Kerala and 75 from Karnataka.

A total of 4,05,028 deaths have been reported so far in the country. This includes 1,23,857 from Maharashtra, 35,601 from Karnataka, 33,196 from Tamil Nadu, 25,005 from Delhi, 22,666 from Uttar Pradesh, 17,850 from West Bengal and 16,141 from Punjab.

A government-mandated study has found no traces of novel coronavirus in Ganga waters after dead bodies were fished out from the river in some districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during the peak of the second wave, sources said Wednesday.

The study was conducted by the National Mission for Clean Ganga under the Jal Shakti Ministry in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR’s) Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR), Lucknow, the Central Pollution Control Board and the state pollution control boards.

The study was conducted in two phases with the samples being taken from Kannuj, Unnao, Kanpur, Hamirpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Balia, Buxar, Ghazipur, Patna and Chhapra, the sources added.

“None of the samples collected had traces of SARS-CoV2,” the sources said.

The virological study extracted the RNA of the viruses from the water samples to conduct an RT-PCR test to determine the viral load in the water body.

The study also included checking the biological characteristics of the river.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were badly hit when the second wave of coronavirus swept the country. There was also a fear of whether the bodies, possibly of COVID-19 infected patients, had led to the contamination of the river water which is a major source of drinking for the population in the districts along with it.
