Yahoo Finance COVID-19 Live Updates: Karnataka extends lockdown till June 7, Kerala to remain locked down till May 30
The Karnataka government on Friday extended the lockdown in the state for another 14 days till June 7.
"We had a meeting with senior officials and ministers. We have taken a decision on lockdown. We had strict restrictions till 24th May. As per the opinion of experts, we are extending the strict restrictions till 7th June at 6 am," Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa said.
Earlier, Kerala too extended the statewide lockdown by a week till May 30 to contain the spread of the coronavirus infection.
"Same guidelines will continue. People are roaming after 10 am as well which is creating a lot of problems throughout the state. That's why such movements must be stopped. I urge people to stop unnecessary movements," he added.
"The government has decided to give free treatment for Mucormycosis (black fungus) patients in the govt district hospitals," he Yediyurappa said.
The daily rise in coronavirus cases in India remained below 3 lakh for the fifth consecutive day with 2.59 lakh new cases recorded in a single day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged bringing medical services closer to COVID-19 patients, coming up with a new mantra –- Jahan bimaar, wahin upchaar –- at a video conference with doctors where he choked up while speaking of lives lost to the virus. India's COVID daily recoveries continued to outnumber the daily new cases for the eighth consecutive day, with 3,57,295 patients recuperating in a span of 24 hours.
The 4,209 new fatalities include 984 from Maharashtra, 548 from Karnataka, 397 from Tamil Nadu, 236 from Uttar Pradesh, 233 from Delhi, 191 from Punjab, 162 from West Bengal, 159 from Uttarakhand, 129 from Haryana, 128 from Kerala, 127 from Rajasthan, 114 from Andhra Pradesh and 113 from Chhattisgarh.
A total of 2,91,331 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 85,355 from Maharashtra, 23,854 from Karnataka, 22,579 from Delhi, 19,131 from Tamil Nadu, 18,588 from Uttar Pradesh, 13,895 from West Bengal, 12,716 from Punjab and 12,295 from Chhattisgarh.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka government will resume the vaccination drive for people in the 18-44 years age group from Saturday. The frontline warriors will be the first to receive the jabs followed by other eligible groups in the list, the state government said in an order.
The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.
