Deaths: A further 300 people died after testing positive for coronavirus in England between 28 September and 9 November. Scotland reported 39 new deaths in 24 hours, Northern Ireland had 11 and there were 22 in Wales.

The number of weekly COVID-19 deaths has risen above 1,000 in England and Wales for the first time since June, new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show. The 1,379 deaths registered in the week ending 30 October is the highest weekly number of deaths involving COVID-19 since the week ending 5 June. Read more here.

Vaccines: GPs have been told to be ready to administer the vaccine against coronavirus from next month if it passes vital safety tests. One scientist has even suggested life could go back to normal by spring. Read more here.

Wales: GCSE, A level and AS exams are going to be scrapped in Wales for 2021, with pupils assessed on class work instead. Welsh education minister Kirsty Williams said the ongoing pandemic made it “impossible to guarantee a level playing field for exams to take place”. Read more here.

Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon has announced Angus, Fife and Perth and Kinross will move into tier 3 of the nation’s coronavirus restrictions. It means pubs and restaurants will be prohibited from selling alcohol and will close at 6pm, with last entry at 5pm. Read more here.

Mass testing: Nottingham will be one of 66 areas of England to receive mass coronavirus testing, the health secretary has said. Matt Hancock announced on Tuesday that the mass COVID-19 testing pilot in Liverpool will be rolled out across the country. Read more here.

Christmas: Christmas could cause a third wave of coronavirus unless traditional celebrations are cancelled, the director of a French hospital has warned. Julien Lenglet, head of the Antony Hospital in Paris, said celebrating Christmas and New Year could lead to another surge in COVID-19 cases. Read more here.

The government is reportedly planning to introduce mass coronavirus testing for students so they can go home for Christmas without spreading the virus. In a letter from universities minister Michelle Donelan to vice chancellors across England, she says testing is likely begin by the end of this month. Read more here.

Mental health: The coronavirus may trigger the onset of psychiatric disorders in some survivors, research suggests. Scientists from the University of Oxford combed through medical data on more than 69 million people across the US, and found of patients with no psychiatric history, testing positive for the coronavirus more than doubled their risk of later developing anxiety, insomnia or even dementia compared with the participants who overcame flu.
