Have your say: Are you better prepared for a second lockdown?

With cases of coronavirus continuing to grow in England, the government is under increasing pressure to impose a second national lockdown.

A study by Imperial College London claims that 96,000 people are catching COVID-19 every day in England.

Experts are now suggesting a national lockdown – rather than the current tiered regional approach – is needed to address the soaring infection rate.

Communities secretary Robert Jenrick said on Thursday morning that the government will “try everything in our power” to avoid a “blanket national lockdown”.

But home secretary Priti Patel later said they would rule nothing out.

During the first national lockdown, which saw supermarkets run out of items like pasta and toilet paper, Britons had to find ways to amuse themselves indoors – including with Zoom quizzes, baking and exercising in front of the television.

But Jenrick acknowledged that people had now been left “fatigued” and “frustrated” by coronavirus restrictions – which would force people to stay at home until COVID cases start to decrease.
