While food and drink, and exercise businesses have managed to thrive during COVID-19 lockdowns, many others have struggled to adapt to the online world.

UK businesses have had to adapt rapidly to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent national and regional lockdown periods, with many needing to go online to continue trade.

Some industries have been able to adapt more quickly to these changes, but others have struggled to bring their businesses online, according to analysis by The UK Domain.

The study, which compared newly-registered domains during a four-week period in February to the four-week period from 9 March to 2 June, found the industries that managed to adapt the easiest to going online were those that were able to “pivot their business model and still provide a service”.

This included food and drink businesses, for which registered domains shot up a fifth (22%) – likely due to people ordering food to their homes as an alternative to going out to restaurants, the research found.

Meanwhile, exercise- and fitness-related businesses also grew, rising by nearly a quarter (23%) with people looking to keep fit at home while gyms were closed.

Industries that were not able to adapt so easily saw less of an increase throughout lockdown. For example, businesses related to outdoor activities or services were greatly impacted by lockdowns, and experienced a decline in domain registrations as a result, the data shows.

In addition, taxis saw a huge decrease of 38% in websites popping up compared with previous months, as people were less likely to be heading outside and travelling.

Interestingly, interior and decoration businesses also decreased by 14%, while gardening went up by 10% – likely reflecting Brits wanting to make the most of their safe outdoor spaces.
