Corrie snubbed by BAFTA TV Awards one year after winning top prize

The BAFTA TV Awards has announced the full list of nominees for this year, and since there are only three nominations per category, it means that some of our favourite British soaps get snubbed.

This year, the three shows up for the Soap & Continuing Drama category are Casualty, EastEnders and Emmerdale.

Yup, that means that Coronation Street surprisingly isn't up for an award, despite not only being a nominee last year, but the winner.

At least Emmerdale made it onto the list of nominees for the BAFTA TV Awards this year, as neither ITV soap made the trio of nominees for the Royal Television Society Programme Awards. We'll find out which soap wins a gong from the RTS next week (March 28).

As for the BAFTA TV Awards, the main ceremony will take place on May 14, and will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Will it feature a slightly-bizarre rap namechecking all the nominees that goes viral all over the world? One can only hope.

Over the last year, Corrie has embarked on a far-right extremism storyline and introduced a brand-new serial killer in the form of Stephen Reid, who is still up to all sorts of nefariousness.

In fact, actor Todd Boyce has teased that his character will kill again, stating to The Mirror: "He has a taste for it now and I think he figures that if he gets caught for three, he might as well get caught for four or five.

"It would be great to go down in the record books as the show's biggest serial killer."

Could Stephen take Pat Phelan's title as Corrie's most successful murderer, and will it be one of the stories that lead it to awards recognition next year?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
