Cory Sandhagen viciously KOs Frankie Edgar with flying knee in 28 seconds

Cory Sandhagen delivered one of the greatest, most vicious knockouts in UFC history against one of its greatest fighters Saturday at Apex in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 18.

Sandhagen leaped into the air as Frankie Edgar ducked his head as if he were going for a takedown. At the same time, Sandhagen leaped into the air and caught Edgar squarely on the chin.

Edgar was out instantly and took a dead fall to the canvas. As Sandhagen casually walked away after the 28-second victory, referee Keith Peterson frantically waved to the doctors to get into the cage to attend to Edgar.

“It feels good, but that’s Frankie Edgar,” Sandhagen said. “I don’t want to watch that happen to him, but better him than me. That’s the game we’re in.”

It was scary for several minutes as the medical staff attended to Edgar. But he was able to get to the center of the ring under his own power for the announcement and appeared to be OK.

It was a massive win for Sandhagen in the bantamweight division and makes a strong case for him to be the first challenger for the winner of next month’s title bout between champion Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling. Sterling choked out Sandhagen in the first round last year.

“I’m a different monster than I was before I fought Aljamain Sterling,” Sandhagen said. “He taught me some lessons. I know Yan has been talking about fighting T.J. [Dillashaw] after that fight, if he even wins that fight. That’s garbage to me. I’m the toughest guy. Fight me. If Aljamain wins, I owe him a nap and he’s going to get that nap.”

He said going into the fight that he had some tricks up his sleeve for Edgar, but he gave the legend a nap instead with the second-fastest flying knee knockout in UFC history. Only Jorge Masvidal’s five-second KO of Ben Askren was quicker.
