Couple stuns mother at banquet with stirring gesture: 'We really didn't know what to expect'

Couple stuns mother at banquet with stirring gesture: 'We really didn't know what to expect'

A young couple took a mother with cancer by surprise by announcing at their wedding banquet that they would shave their hands in solidarity.

On Nov. 21, 20-year-old Jony Lee and her now husband Alistair — both in full wedding attire — told their guests at Allely Estate in Kumeut that they would shave their heads in a show of support for Jony’s mother Luna Macapagal. Macapagal, who hailed from Auckland, New Zealand, was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2018, according to the Daily Mail.

The touching moment was all captured on video and shared in a TikTok by user @soyguerrerense. As of this writing, the clip has been liked more than 3.6 million times.

“We love you so much, and we want to show our solidarity with you,” Jony tells her mother in the TikTok. “My parents think and believe that we’re going to do a traditional Filipino dance, where you stick money into our clothes and blablabla to get more money. But what we’re doing is, if you do have a bit of cash on you, we are going to be shaving our heads for cancer and, whatever money you do lay in front of us, we will be donating it.”

Multiple guests at the wedding banquet are then seen dropping off cash in front of the couple, before Jony and Alistair raise their hands with Macapagal in solidarity.

The TikTok has since received a flood of supportive comments from users.

“Good for them,” one person wrote. “That’s love right there.”

“MY HEART,” another added. “The fact that they made this moment of their wedding about supporting their mom is beautiful.”

“This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen,” a third commented.

Sadly, Macapagal passed away on Jan 12. Still, Jony, who credits her husband for coming up with the idea of shaving their heads on their wedding day, told the Daily Mail that she was glad to share such a special moment with her mother.

“We were so happy to see how happy and proud it made her,” she said. “We didn’t really know what to expect but we were so happy in the moment.”

Jony also thanked TikTokers for their support on her own account.

“[We’re] overwhelmed with the endless love,” she wrote. “We miss mum everyday, I know she wishes she could hug you all.”

Jony and Alistair, who have known each other since they were 5 years old and share bits and pieces of their lives on TikTok, have continued to raise money in Macapagal's memory

Through the crowdfunding site Givealittle, the pair has so far raised over $3,000.

“We have received donations from all around the world which was also very unexpected, and we are so grateful to those who have donated or offered words of support,” Jony told the Daily Mail.
