Yahoo Finance COVID-19: 35 new cases, all imported, detected in Singapore
SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed the detection of 35 new cases of COVID-19 infection in Singapore as of noon on Sunday (3 January), taking the country’s total case count to 58,697.
All the new cases are imported and have been placed on Stay-Home Notice since their arrival in Singapore. They include six Singaporeans or permanent residents, as well as seven foreign domestic workers.
Of these cases, 32 are asymptomatic, and while three were symptomatic.
There are no new locally transmitted cases.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased from one case in the week before to 10 cases in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased from one case in the week before to four cases in the past week.
Amongst the 35 imported cases,
• one is a Singaporean and five are Singapore permanent residents who returned from the UK,
India and Indonesia.
• 10 are dependant’s pass holders who arrived from India and UAE.
• one is a long-term visit pass holder who arrived from India.
• four are work pass holders who arrived from Russia, India, Japan and Maldives.
• 12 are work permit holders who arrived from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Malaysia, of whom seven are foreign domestic workers.
• Two are short-term visit pass holders. One arrived from India to visit his Singaporean child. The other case is a cargo pilot who arrived from the US via Australia.
One of the imported cases is a ship crew who had boarded a vessel on 4 March 2020 in Indonesia. He developed a fever on 23 December but had self-medicated. On 31 December, he was placed on quarantine as he had been identified as a close contact of a previously reported case who is a crew member of the same vessel.
The latest crew case failed to declare his symptoms until last Saturday. He consulted a doctor via video-consultation on the same day, and was subsequently conveyed to NCID where he tested positive for COVID-19. Prior to that, he had not disembarked from the vessel. All the remaining crew members of the vessel have been placed on quarantine.
99% of total cases have recovered
With 11 more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Sunday, 58,487 cases – or 99.7 per cent of the total – have fully recovered from the infection.
Most of the 64 hospitalised cases are stable or improving, and one is in the intensive care unit.
A total of 117 patients – with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive – are isolated and cared for at community facilities.
Apart from 29 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.
