Curd or yoghurt — Which one is healthier?

Most of us are familiar with the curd vs yoghurt debate. Whether we go to a restaurant and ask for a smoothie or try buying some from the local grocery store, everyone seems to think curd and yogurt are the same things. Add probiotic yogurt into this confusion, as if the debate about difference and health benefits of curd and yoghurt was not enough.

So what exactly is the difference and which is the healthier option? Read on to get all the details.

Are curd and yoghurt the same?

No, curd and yoghurt are two different food items made from the same raw material.

The main difference between curd and yoghurt is the type of microbe used to ferment the boiled milk. For making curd, we have to boil the milk, cool it down a little and then add some curd or lassi containing either of these bacteria species: Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactococcus Lactis, or Lactococcus Lactis Cremoris. Curd can be made by either of these or by a mixture of these three types of bacteria.

And when it comes to making yoghurt, the preparatory process of boiling and cooling milk is the same. The difference lies in the bacteria strain used here. For making yoghurt, two specific bacterias are grown in labs, which are Lactobacillus Bulgaricus and Streptococcus Thermophilus. These two bacteria species are specially grown industrially and added in measured quantities. Further, to achieve the right consistency and texture of yoghurt, a specific quality of these microbes is required. This is followed so that these microbes reach our gut in the live form to help the digestion process.

Probiotic yoghurt is made from live bacteria that are resistant to gastric acids, bile and pancreatic juice.

So which is healthier: yoghurt or curd?

The answer lies in your requirement. If you are an aspiring bodybuilder or a fitness freak who exercises regularly, then yoghurt will be a great choice for you. Yoghurt has lots of proteins that can help you build core strength and lose body weight for a lean frame.

However, if you are looking to improve your digestion and immunity, then curd will be the right choice for you. The bacteria present in curd can help you with indigestion, acidity and cool down body temperature.
