If you thought all smart TVs looked the same, check out this new 40-inch flatscreen from TCL, which has the Roku smart platform built in.

This creation leads the pack when it comes to streaming services, and it’s currently available from Currys for £249.99, a saving of £30.

Roku is best known for its streaming sticks and media players. Here the Roku platform is baked into the set itself, with a few new features to make the streaming experience seamless.

The TCL RS520K is available in two screen sizes, 32 and 40 inches. Our featured 40-inch model is Full HD, which works fine at this screen size.

If you want access to the widest range of streaming apps, then this Roku is for you. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, AppleTV+, NOW, Rakuten TV are all present and correct, with plenty more to download from the Roku app store.

The set also comes with the Roku Channel app, a fun mix of dusty old library stuff and shiny new Roku exclusives.

Why we love it

Overall usability is great. Nipping around the menus is quick and easy, the familiar Roku ‘boop’ confirming all commands.

The supplied remote comes with dedicated buttons for Freeview Play, Netflix, Spotify, Apple TV Plus and Rakuten TV. The TV will also work with Amazon Alexa and Google voice assistants, and is compatible with Apple Airplay 2, so you can share content easily from your iPhone or iPad.

Freeview Play also guarantees all the main catch-up players are on board (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4, My5, UKTV Play), plus a large selection of box sets too.

Adding a cinematic sheen, the 4K set even has HDR support, to make the most of HDR content on Disney+ and Netflix.

Overall, this budget 40-inch set definitely warrants two thumbs up.

It’s an affordable upgrade for those seeking a new smart TV for the living room, and it’s a tempting second set for streaming telly addicts.
