There’s a great bunch of money-saving deals and discounts for you to grab this week, including 10% off groceries for students, school uniform bargains and some tips on claiming PPI compensation.

But don’t forget, a bargain is only a good deal if you were planning to splash out on it anyway.

10% off food for students

Savvy students can use their NUS extra card to get 10% off groceries at the Co-op.

On top of that saving, if students become members of the Co-op, they’ll get a further 5% reward when they buy Co-op-branded products and services – with the retailer donating an additional 1% to local causes.

Tip of the week

You now have less than a year to claim for mis-sold PPI. Hannah Maundrell, editor in chief of money.co.uk warns that you should claim yourself and avoid paying a fat fee to a claims management company. Here’s her six tips on how to make a claim:

1. Contact the company that sold you PPI and explain why you believe you were mis-sold PPI.

2. Call your lender to follow up. You may be able to handle the rest of your claim over the phone.

3. Insist you will go to the Financial Ombudsman if you do not get a refund within 14 days.

4. If the company has denied that your PPI policy was mis-sold use a template letter.

5. If the company offers an inadequate settlement, write back to explain why they should pay you more.

6. If you’re not satisfied with the response, take the matter to the free Financial Ombudsman which will decide if you were mis-sold the policy.
