Cyberpunk 2077 campaign will be shorter than Witcher 3’s because of flaky players

A CD Projekt RED developer said that Cyberpunk 2077 will have a shorter campaign because of The Witcher 3’s low completion rate.

Patrick K. Mills, senior level designer at CD Projekt RED, shared the update during a post-episode AMA following the third episode of Night City Wire. Mills described the reasoning behind CD Projekt’s decision to go with a lighter campaign this time around (thanks to ResetEra user Saucycaprdog).

“We do know the main story run in Cyberpunk 2077 is slightly shorter than The Witcher 3,” Mills said on the stream. “Cause we got a lot of complaints about Witcher 3’s main story just being too long. And looking at the metrics you see tremendous numbers of people played through that game really far but never made it to the end. We want you to see the whole story.”

What Mills shared is actually a very common phenomenon that all games deal with: Most players will not finish any given video game and many will buy a game only to have it stay untouched on their account for months or even years. Out of all the gamers who bought The Witcher 3 on Steam, only 27 percent have managed to finish the main story.

The most obvious factor, of course, is that most gamers are hobbyists and The Witcher 3 is very, very long. On average, players spent about 51 hours finishing the main quest, according to How Long To Beat. Those who spent time doing side quests spent double that amount and the completionists clocked in at a whopping 172 hours.

Mills assured fans that there’s lots to do in Cyberpunk 2077 and that seems to be reflected in all of CD Projekt’s promotional materials. CDR has released a plethora of content about Night City — its locations, its gangs, its major players and all the activities you’ll be able to participate in from bars to shady corporate espionage.

However, the developer has been oddly tight-lipped about the game’s actual story. We still have no idea why V (you, the player character) is in Night City and what your ultimate goal will be. All we know about the main story is that you can actually beat Cyberpunk 2077 without even finishing the main quest.

It’s an ambitious design goal and one we’re looking forward to experiencing ourselves.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on Nov. 12 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S and Xbox One.
