Dating 'Expert' Says Men Should Never Let a Woman Pay for the First Date

This is the 21st Century right, so it's okay to split the bill on a first date, right? Not according to TikTok dating 'expert' Nelly, who, in a recent video that has massed more than 85,000 views, explained why she thinks men should always foot the bill on a first date.

Speaking on her TikTok channel @ask.nelly, she explained how, "Men should never let a woman pay for a first date because if you're asking a girl out and then going Dutch, it just shows you're cheap, you weren't raised right, you're not chivalrous and you're dating outside of your price range." Ouch.

So far, so not progressive. But in Nelly's defence, she did say that if you can't afford to take your date for a fancy meal, then a picnic in the park would suffice – anything, as long as the man ultimately foots the bill.

"By that [dating out of your price range] I mean you're taking a girl out on a date you can't afford to be on, so instead of trying to flex on a nice dinner, you're better off taking her on a picnic in the park."

Nelly finished her argument by saying that it wasn't just her who thought this way, "Even the most progressive girls who insist they split it with you and say they don't mind... do mind," she said.

"Not because they can't afford it, but because it shows us your character and if you're a girl and you've paid for first dates, I want to tell you that he ain't it sis'."

Again, ouch.

So far Nelly's video has been commented on more than 1300 times, and it's fair to say views are mixed.

Commenting on the video, one woman said: "I would rather pay for myself. Then there are no 'expectations'."

While another woman disagreed and said: "I don't mind paying, but if I pay on the first date there won't be a second. We can be friends."

So what is a man to do? Your guess is as good as ours.
